Art Oil pastels

Back 2 Basics.

4 April 2026 · oil pastels, art explorations

going "back to basics". just a wee collection of oil pastel experiments from the start of 2026. my oil pastel love affair started in the third year of my PhD having suffered serious mental damage from a time i sometimes wish i didn't remember. picking up some wee (fondly-named) adult-crayons was the offering my body needed. feeling the tactile sensation of pressing and scraping the pastel into the paper, a sensational mess of textures and colours, spluttered and splurged onto the sacrificial altar of my "too-muchness". this beatuifully soft & intense medium helped me explore hard emotions—to hold and feel and turn them around in my hands—and to ground myself in the present when i struggled to remember what was real. it is such a blessing to experience beauty from our own hands. remember to go back to basics, and to sit with yourself for long enough to re-get to know yourself again. we're always changing! may you never stop creating and staying curious in the process of re-becoming.

Sunfish oil pastel
Sunfish fact: we would all be better off with a healthy dose of goofiness and silliness in our lives.
Orchid mantis oil pastel
Orchid mantis. Intricate and imperfect, and she's still got more swag than you.
Treasure oil pastel
Treasure. R.I.P. (Rest In Power with your massive forehead queen).
Tiger oil pastel
Tiger. Rather than being reactive, stretch out and find stillness. May I be like water, fluid and formless.
